Lyle Monroe, Jr.
November 7th, 1945 – July 12th, 2026
Lyle was born November 7, 1945, in Great Falls, Montana, to Lyle and Catherine (Gallagher) Monroe. He attended local schools and graduated from Central Catholic High School. Following graduation, he went to college at Assumption Abbey in North Dakota, where he met Laura Brodigan (Clegg), before going on to graduate from the College of Great Falls in 1965. Lyle and Laura married in 1969 and had three sons. They later divorced.
Helping people was his calling, and he spent some years of his career working in social services and nonprofit organizations. He later moved to Colorado, where he was a manager of retirement communities, and then to Arizona, where he worked for the Mesa school district until his retirement.
Lyle never met a stranger. He would talk to anyone about anything, any time, and he genuinely enjoyed the conversation. He was a sharp, curious man who found people interesting and was a collector of art and artifacts of everyday life. If you were Lyle’s friend, you were his friend for life. He was truly one of a kind.
One of the great honors of his life was serving as one of the 100 delegates to Montana’s 1972 Constitutional Convention, where he served on the Bill of Rights Committee and helped write the state’s new constitution.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Beverly Luchsinger and Carol Monroe; and two brothers, Bobby, who died in infancy, and Jim Monroe. He is survived by his sons, Trevor, Michael, and Jeremy; five grandchildren; his sister, Rosemary Adolphson; and his brother, Jerry Monroe.
Lyle had a lifelong passion for the history, politics and nature of the American West. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to foundations like the Friends of the Montana Constitution, Freshwaters Illustrated, and the Great Falls Public Library Foundation in his name.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 7, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona.
